INQUEST is a small charity with a staff team of eight providing free advice to people bereaved by a death in custody and detention and is entirely independent of government. We are reliant on donations and grants, without which we could not carry on our vital work for truth, justice and accountability.

Stats Watch

08.12.16 Our casework team has opened 497 cases to date in 2016.

07.12.16 Three deaths in immigration detention have been reported in 2016, including one homicide.

07.12.16 There have been 319 deaths in prison so far this year, including 22 women, 15 young people aged 18-24, 3 homicides and 107 self-inflicted deaths.

06.12.16 There have been 11 self-inflicted deaths of women in prison this year to date; twice the number in the whole of 2015.

29.11.16 There have been 39 deaths involving the police in England & Wales so far this year, including 4 fatal shootings.
