INQUEST is a small charity with a staff team of eight providing free advice to people bereaved by a death in custody and detention and is entirely independent of government. We are reliant on donations and grants, without which we could not carry on our vital work for truth, justice and accountability.

Stats Watch

23.03.17 Our casework team has opened 117 cases to date in 2017, and 516 in 2016.

23.03.17 There have been 10 deaths involving the police so far this year, including 2 police shootings.

22.03.17 So far in 2017 there have been 63 deaths in prison, including 16 self-inflicted deaths and 2 women.

11.01.17 There has been one self-inflicted death in immigration detention so far in 2017.

16.01.17 There were 345 deaths in prison in 2016, including 22 women, 16 young people aged 18-24, 3 homicides and 113 self-inflicted deaths.

31.12.16 There were 45 deaths involving the police in England & Wales in 2016, including 4 fatal shootings.

31.12.16 Three deaths in immigration detention were reported in 2016, including one homicide.

31.12.16 There were 12 self-inflicted deaths of women in prison in 2016; more than twice the number in 2015.
