This timeline of events following the death of Sheku Bayoh was prepared by Aamer Anwar Solicitors, who represent the family. 

  • 3rd May 2015 – Death of Sheku Bayoh. Press release from Police Scotland incorrectly asserting that an officer had been stabbed
  • 6th May 2015 – Draft Post Mortem report made available, meeting with PIRC investigator
  • 14th May 2015 – Meeting with Lord Advocate (Frank Mulholland QC) and Press Conference. Despite all the restraint officers failing to provide statements to the PIRC, their representatives issue a statement outlining their version of events.
  • 29th  May 2015 – Meeting with PIRC – requested SOPs
  • 1st June 2015 – Sheku’s body authorised for release
  • 2nd June 2015: Police Federation issue press release asserting a particular version of events. Family note that whilst briefing the press, officers are yet to provide statements to PIRC investigators.
  • 7th June 2015 – Funeral
  • 22nd June 2015 – weight of police officers requested, meeting with PIRC
  • 1st July 2015 – correspondence sent to Lord Advocate & PIRC dealing with variety of matters, reiterating positional asphyxia and restraint technique as matters of interest. Raising queries about expertise of proposed experts in this regard.
  • 21st July 2015 – Expert witness pack prepared by PIRC provided
  • 23rd July 2015 – further request for weight of police officers
  • 24th July 2015 – meeting with Lindsey Miller & Deborah Coles Inquest.
  • 7th August 2015 – Interim report by PIRC passed to Lord Advocate
  • 21st August 2015 – further request to Crown for weight of Officer A (PC Alan Paton)
  • 25th August 2015 – confirmation from PIRC that Officer A refusing to provide weight to PIRC; undertaking to provide to Crown but had not done so.
  • 26th August 2015 – Meeting with Lord Advocate. Family advised Lord Advocate they no longer had confidence in PIRC
  • 1st September 2015 – Concern re-raised about instruction of experts who may come to investigation with certain agenda.
  • 3rd September 2015 – Meeting with PIRC
  • 7th September 2015 – Meeting with Sir Stephen House, following public condemnation of his failure to meet with the Bayoh family.
  • 16th September 2015 – Experts proposed to family by Crown Office
  • 7th October 2015 – Redacted statements provided by PIRC
  • 8th October 2015 – Family allowed to view CCTV
  • 8th October 2015 – Cross-party meeting at Scottish Parliament
  • 15th October 2015 – Meeting with Lord Advocate and Deborah Coles
  • 5th November 2015 – Meeting with Lord Advocate, letter to him expressing concern about public comments in tabloid of expert, Dr Karch and use of the term ‘Excited Delerium’ which it had been agreed would not be accepted.
  • 24th November 2015 – Meeting with the First Minister
  • 8th January 2016 – interview of family members of Constable Alan Paton
  • 22nd February 2016 – Crown in “preliminary discussions” with Health and Safety Executive
  • 9th May 2016 – Meeting with Lord Advocate
  • 10th August 2016 – Report provided from PIRC to Crown
  • 27th September 2016 – “Specialist team” set up Crown under a QC Advocate Depute.
  • 5th December 2016 – Meeting with Lindsey Miller and Les Brown of COPFS
  • 8th February 2017 – Meeting with Lord Advocate – A2 issues raised
  • 2nd May 2018 – Civil Action raised against Chief Constable
  • 3rd October 2018 – Meeting with Lord Advocate – family advised that no one is to be prosecuted for death of Sheku Bayoh. Thereafter family meet with Cabinet Secretary for Justice.
  • 30th February 2019 – family’s representatives afforded brief access to CCTV from Kirkcaldy Police Office on relevant date
  • 1st February 2019 – family submit request for review of prosecutorial decision
