The Senior Policy Officer will be responsible for maximising policy opportunities and, combined with evidence from INQUEST’s specialist casework and statistical data use this to shape our recommendations and strategically respond to the ever-pressing demands for our input.  A key part of the role will be to maintain an overview of the external policy environment, identify new influencing opportunities, undertake policy reviews and deliver on specific projects.

INQUEST has developed a new three-year strategic plan 2018-2021, leading up to its 40th birthday. Its aim is to carry on supporting bereaved families, as well as ensuring that we remain at the centre of the policy agenda related to state-related contentious deaths. As the only organisation in England and Wales doing such work, we want to cement our position of leader in the sector and build on our authoritative and influencing work.

The focus of our work is state-related contentious deaths, and our projects are wide-reaching as we look to influence a number of policy areas.  Specific projects that you will either lead, or contribute to, include:

  • Taking forward the recommendations of the Angioloni Review (Independent Review of Deaths and Serious Incidents in Police Custody)
  • Taking forward the recommendations of Bishop’s Review (Review of the Hillsborough Families’ Experiences by the Rt Rev Bishop James Jones);
  • Influencing work related to the monitoring of deaths and the improvement of the investigation processes to hold the state to account;
  • Monitoring the public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower Fire.

You will work as part of a team.  Whilst the parliamentary and broader policy work is led by the Executive Director, Deborah Coles, INQUEST’s casework specialists also play an integral role in ensuring that our policy messages are evidence-based and compelling, and that we speak with authority.  You will also be supported by the Operations Director and will line manage the Policy Officer. You will also work closely with the Caseworkers who manage our casework with bereaved families, and as such have essential insights and extensive knowledge that feeds into our policy work.  You will also be supported by our communications team to convey key messages and wider dissemination.  You will be able to recruit and manage volunteers to support you in your day to day work; our existing volunteers are highly dedicated and have wide ranging skills and experiences.

Please carefully read the full recruitment pack here.
